Darren Gray became a major player in the dodgy dealings headed up by Aiden Talbot, whom he had worked for at the previous cannabis farm with his brothers Lee and Thomas Gray. They were jailed in 2013 for the parts they played in the cannabis enterprise, which was capable of turning over £2m a year from a remote farmhouse.
After fleeing to France and onto Spain when their undercover network was cracked by cops, Darren Gray was eventually apprehended and sentenced to 17 years in prison on Friday for his part in the gang's next enterprise. The crooks ran a "multi-million pound business with as many as 30 regular wholesale customers" which turned over a staggering £28.4m in just 15 months.
Ben Jones, prosecuting, described him as "lieutenant" to the ringleader, to whom he was "clearly subservient". Gray, 38, was said to be the gang's "bookkeeper and money man". His role had been to invest the substantial profits in legitimate areas, including the purchase of property in Spain.
The crime gang had used the EncroChat system to conduct their dodgy dealings - as they believed it was "safe" - but it was infiltrated by law enforcement and used to trace and ultimately prosecute a number of criminals across the world.
